President’s Message

Dear Pastellists,

It has been an exciting few months for the Pastel Society. Our exhibition
was extraordinarily successful thanks to our many hardworking members
and volunteers. Congratulations once again to all our worthy winners and
congratulations to all those who made sales.

We are truly blessed with ‘springtime’ weather which made this year’s
event the most successful in many years.

Next on the agenda is our outing to Government House on the 24th of
September to partake in a little plein air. So, I hope you are all getting your
gear ready and crossing fingers for some more good weather.

Our esteemed Vice President, Jill Buckrell has relaunched her Monday night
pastel schedule. Please take note of the email regarding this as I believe
she has a lot of fun and interesting plans for Monday nights and beyond.

Keep well and happy pastelling

Here is a chance to
… work with a well known Master Pastellist renowned for his renderings of skies and landscapes;
… develop your plein-air painting skills (weather-permitting, workshops are held outside);
… interact with a very personable and committed teacher.

DATE: Sat 5th – Sun 6th March 8.30am – 4.30pm (Labour Day weekend)
Pre-workshop tutorial: Wednesday 2nd March 7.00 – 9.30pm (Mildenhall, Duncraig)

COST: $250.00 per person for the two days and pre-workshop tutorial, due Jan 31.
Workshop Organisation each day: 8.30 – 12.00 (approx): Painting Plein air (outside).
1.00 – 4.30 (approx): Indoor workshop.

This organisation gives you the best of both worlds – working with Stan in the morning to develop
your plein air paintings skills, then indoors with Stan for an afternoon of teaching with the Master.

STAN SPERLAK …

Stan Sperlak

Creating Unique, Colorful and Painterly Landscapes in Pastel!

Stan Sperlak will conduct a mixed indoor/outdoor landscape workshop in pastel that will cover his various methods of painting that focus on creating believable works through mature use of light, form and color. His teaching technique is very direct and easy to grasp, allowing for many hours of student teacher interaction. Demonstrations are to be expected in his fast paced workshops. You will leave the workshop with a new sense of yourself as an artist.

Join this intensive pastel painting workshop on how to improve your pastel paintings of the landscape. The elusive effects of light on forms, designing better contrasts, layering, strengthening how colors can be employed to new effects, and solving the riddle for developing better understanding of values will all be woven together to help your work take on a new appearance and believability. The workshop is good for all levels of artists as Stan’s style of teaching is very independently directed.

Stan is a recognized leader in helping to develop artists who work in pastel. He is known for his dramatic landscape paintings of the sea, wetlands and sky. His workshops are unique experiences that are incredibly fast paced and cover a myriad of information on drawing, color, texture, form, space and how to release and learn to express yourself with this very rewarding medium.
